painted buildings

some town buildings were painted i got some scanned reference of what buildings may look like with colour

sketches (drawings)

doors, windows and props (scans)

Town layout reseach

  • Town 19th century were smoky, smelly, cramped, dirty
  • Towns were usually T shaped main street ends at train station

structure

Majority of the building structure are wooden however the banks and jails are usually depicted as brick buildings

there were constant building and re-building of houses in towns due to fires and ware and tear

western town thoughts

most western films feature a saloon with swinging doors close to the centre of town (usually). these saloons are mostly two stories high with railings most town also consist of banks, dry goods store, jails, post office, feed store and train station.

Saloons did not typically  stay open 24/7 and they had to lock up like other business the swingings doors would not accomplish this

3;10 to yuma research thoughts

i watched 3;10 to yuma as research for my level design, an importsnt element for just about any western  movie is set design.

watched the behind the scene footage, a set designer was interviewed, she spoke about how ''the west is  a body of myths and legends'' and that they have been maintained and built on through-out the years from popular literature and films.

it then hit me that my idea about the stereotypical western town layout have been based on movie sets and what i have seen on television.

although movie sets were designed in consideration for the camera crew filming.
